About The Hollywood Sign
Originally erected in 1923, the creators of The Hollywood Sign did not intend for it to become a famous Los Angeles, CA and worldwide landmark, but that’s exactly what happened. The Hollywood Sign originally read Hollywoodland and was built as an advertising campaign to promote a new, local subdivision. Though the campaign was originally designed to be temporary, it quickly gained popularity. Each letter has been replaced and reinforced throughout the years. In addition, the area surrounding the sign has been gated off for preservation. We believe Griffith Observatory offers the best view of the sign, but one could also hike the trails surrounding The Hollywood Sign for a different perspective.
